INTERSECT’s main result will be the release of the Interoperable Material-To-Device Simulation Box (IM2D) that is conceived as an interoperable, robust and friendly software solution for easier exploration of the materials workspace from an electronic device-oriented industrial perspective.

Beside the overall IM2D infrastructure, a set of key exploitable results has been selected and ranked .They are the Ginestra-AiiDA interface, the AiiDA-QE interface, the Aiida-SIESTA interface, the properties workflows, the Analysis of complex systems, and the semantic workflow.

The event will host many industrial keynotes and panel discussions. On Tuesday, March 23, 2021 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, our intersecter Elisa Molinari (CNR-Nano) will join the “Applications Support in EuroHPC – Status and Future: Centres of Excellence in Context” panel discussion for the “CoEs on the Road to Exascale Part 2” session, together with many other experts.

On Wednesday, 24th, from 3,00 to 4,00 pm,. our intersecters Nicola Marzari (EPFL) and Pablo Ordejón (ICN2) will join the “MaX CoE Workshop – Computational Materials Design at the Exascale: porting community codes, challenges and success cases” panel discussion, together with other researchers from our coordinator CNR-Nano (Andrea Ferretti, and Daniele Varsano) and other experts.

The organisers of the EHPCSW 2021 are the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) and the European Technology Platform for High-Performance Computing (ETP4HPC). The European Commission (EC) will represent the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC) in the organisation of the conference. The logistical organisation is supported by a local host: for the 2021 edition this will be Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – Computação Cientifica Nacional (FCT-FCCN).

Participation in the EuroHPC Summit Week 2021 including PRACEdays21 is free of charge and includes admission to all sessions, workshops, and tracks.

We are very interested in the event because one of the INTERSECT mission is to exploit the synergic interplay among material and device simulation tools to reduce the gap between ideal and “real-life” materials, for direct and easy exploitation by industrial users. Our action is dedicated to pursue and accelerate the design of advanced complex materials and innovative devices for application in emerging electronics (e.g., synaptic electronics and neuromorphic computing), with the explicit intent to support and develop the competitiveness of semiconductor companies, including SMEs or startups (especially in Europe) that may suffer the competition with electronics giants from US or Asia. Materials and our ability to understand and utilise their behaviour play a central role in supporting industrial transformation and delivering against the objectives of the European Green Deal. More than ever, we are aware of supply chain capabilities and opportunities of a digitally connected world.

Following successful events held in Vienna in 2017 and 2019, the 3rd EMMC International Workshop will take place on March, 2-4, 2021: it will be totally digital but will retain key element of extended discussion sessions covering the EMMC Focus Areas, that are Modelling development, Interoperability, Digitalisation, Software, Impact in Industry and Policy. Session outcomes will provide input to future research agendas, and in particular the EMMC Roadmap.

Plenary talks with important speakers have already been defined, and will include various themes related to materials, such as Interatomic potentials, from ontology to practical applications, digitalization, and modeling. Our PI Nicola Marzari from our partner EPFL will give a talk about “The digital infrastructures for 21st-century science“. The workshop also offers the opportunity for in-depth discussions within 12 Sessions organised by the EMMC Focus Areas. 

The “Open Contributions and Virtual Stands Sessions” will tak place on March, 1st/2nd, from 4.30 pm CET to 5,30 pm CET, and will answer questions and discuss results with other workshop participants. Submission of Open Contributions is possible until Friday, February 26, 2021, 17:00 CET!

Our INTERSECT Project Coordinator Arrigo Calzolari will join the conference during the“Open Contributions and Virtual Stands Session” on March the 2nd, from 4.30 – 5,30 pm (CET).

The EMMC International workshop has become known as a leading cross-cutting event where stakeholders from different materials modelling-related fields in industry and academia get together to discuss topics of strategic importance and elaborate on gaps and potential actions to move the field forward.

Abstract: INTERSECT aims at driving the uptake of materials modelling software in industry, bridging the gap between academic innovation and industrial novel production, with the goal of accelerating the process of materials selection and device design and deployment. The Innovation Management task is explicitly conceived to monitor the market needs and the technical evolution throughout the project lifetime, and to plan an exploitation strategy after its end. One main purpose of Innovation Management is to constantly refine the project work plan so as to meet the market and partner institutions’ (including academic, R&D institutes, EU infrastructures) needs with state-of-the-art technological solutions.

This deliverable includes the initial IM strategy and a detailed Innovation Management Plan of action. IM activities are managed by AMAT, in close collaboration with the Project Coordinator (CNR), the WP leaders, and the Advisory and Exploitation Board (AEB). Since innovation is not restricted to scientific invention, but embraces all the development and exploitation aspects of the project (such as commercialization, dissemination, licensing, IP management, etc.), this document is tightly connected and complementary to First Data Management Plan (Deliverable D4.2), First Business Plan (Deliverable D4.3), First report on dissemination and communication activity (Deliverable D4.4), Risk assessment and risk mitigation reports (Deliverable D5.2) and the consortium agreement that regulate specific actions and rules in the projects and within the participant groups.

In the initial part of the project (M1-18) the focus activity was on the design and the implementation of software (WP1-2) and the setup of the pilot cases (WP3). Thus, so far the application of this plan was premature. The exploitation activity planning is going to be predominant in the second part of the project, when outcomes and results will be achieved. Nonetheless, we have already set up the innovation tools described below, and we analyzed the qualifying aspects of the projects (e.g., deliverables and governance) along the lines of the present innovation plan (see Sec. 3.4.5). This constitutes the initial step for the actual implementation of the innovation plan.

● Section 1 – Introduction: it briefly presents INTERSECT and describes the purpose of the document and its intended audience;
● Section 2 – Innovation Strategy: it describes the IM approach;
● Section 3 – Innovation Management: it describes the application of the general;
Innovation strategy to INTERSECT and the specific framework for assessment, as a result of the Mapping phase;
● Section 4 – Conclusion: it summarizes the main outcomes of this deliverable.
