The workshop is organized by the Joint Lab Virtual Materials Design (JLVMD) of the Helmholtz association with the support of Frontiers in Materials, and will take place online from July 20 to July 21, 2021.

Numerous technological advancements are driven by materials development, in fields as diverse as energy, environmental protection, information technology, or medicine and health. Solving major societal challenges strongly depends on the acceleration of materials development. This workshop aims at contributing to building a global community of researchers who want to move from simulations as a tool for understanding materials properties to simulations as a tool for designing the behavior or functionality of materials.

The workshop will be organized in four sessions on Materials Acceleration, Digital Twins, Machine Learning, and Methods & Software.

On June 22, 2021, our PI Nicola Marzari from EPFL, director of NCCR MARVEL, will discuss about the new materials discovery during the second edition of nexFrontier series, “Novel Materials Discovery – The Marvel of Computational Science” organized by SwissNex, together with Prof. Clemence Corminboeuf from the Computational Chemistry division at EPFL, Prof. Xingao Gong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, Computational Condensed Matter Physicist, and Professor of Fudan University, and Prof. Peng Wang from Beihang University.

In the specific, Prof. Nicola Marzari will share the great acceleration in materials discovery enabled by quantum-mechanical simulations.

The online event will last from 10:00 am to 11:10 am (UTC +2).

Several aspects of state-of-the-art topics in the field are presented and discussed.

The meeting will take place online from May 31 to June 2, 2021, and provides an opportunity to make use of inherent synergies and foster exchange of knowledge and ideas to promote fruitful collaborations thus enhancing sustainable HPC development.

Our intersecter Nicola Marzari from EPFL will be one of the keynote opening speakers on May 31 (9,15 am), with a speech about “Materials discovery at the intersection between high-performance and high-throughput…“.

ASHPC21 is organized by the Slovenian consortium for high performance computing (SLING) and the Institute of Information Science in Maribor (IZUM), Slovenia, in cooperation with the Research Area Scientific Computing in Innsbruck, Austria, and the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC), Austria. It is a follow-up meeting of AHPC20.

EU Industry Days is Europe’s flagship annual event on industry serves as the main platform to discuss industrial challenges and co-develop opportunities and policy responses in an inclusive dialogue with a wide range of partners. It also helps to ensure that our policies at European, national, regional and local levels work together to enable European industry to deliver jobs, growth and innovation in Europe. The event will take place from 23 – 26 February.

We are very interested in the event because one of the INTERSECT mission is to exploit the synergic interplay among material and device simulation tools to reduce the gap between ideal and “real-life” materials, for direct and easy exploitation by industrial users. Our action is dedicated to pursue and accelerate the design of advanced complex materials and innovative devices for application in emerging electronics (e.g., synaptic electronics and neuromorphic computing), with the explicit intent to support and develop the competitiveness of semiconductor companies, including SMEs or startups (especially in Europe) that may suffer the competition with electronics giants from US or Asia. EC Reflection Paper on The role of Materials in the post-covid society https://intersect-project.eu/ec-reflection-paper-on-the-role-of-materials-in-the-post-covid-society/ Wed, 30 Sep 2020 09:25:00 +0000 http://intersect-project.eu/?p=1676 The European Commission has recently published a report about “The Role of Materials in the Post-Covid Society” (September 2020), a reflection on how materials will enable solutions for a healthy, safe, and resilient society to achieve a sustainable, stable, and stronger economy, able to respond to citizen’s demands.

The report addresses the role of materials in the post-covid society and summarises positioning,  potential solutions, and recommendations that stem from the European Materials community (Alliance for Materials A4M) towards Horizon Europe in the post-covid scenario. The paper compiles existing Strategic Research Agendas (SRAs) of different materials stakeholders and address a specific reflection in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic. It puts forward proposals for strategic research and innovation activities to the European Commission, Member States, and the European Parliament, taking into account the objectives of the Green Deal Priorities and Recovery Plan.

On September, 30th, 2020, at 3,00 p.m., the  European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC) and the “VIMMP” & “The MarketPlace” H2020 projects will host a webinar about “General Overview of European Virtual Materials MarketPlace Projects“, dedicated to establishing virtual marketplace platforms at the service of the materials modelling community.

Speakers for the webinar are Welchy Leite Cavalcanti for “VIMMP” and Adham Hashibon for “The MarketPlace“, and Dr. Hashibon is also one of our INTERSECT Principal Investigators and & WP1 Coordinator for our Fraunhofer partner (read on People).

These Marketplaces hold the objective to facilitate and promote the exchange between all materials modelling stakeholders for the benefit of increased innovation in European manufacturing industry, and will  establish an open-source, user-friendly, powerful web-based marketplace linking beneficiaries from different manufacturing industry sectors with relevant materials modelling activities and resources. In collaboration with the EMMC, both the projects will eventually evolve into true and complete marketplaces, offering a substantial boost to all providers of tools and services and integrating modelling platforms based on Open Simulation Platform (OSP) standards.

Our INTERSECT project agrees and endorses the EMMC definition of Open Simulation Platform (OSP), and our IM2D platform will be made available on those emerging Materials Modelling Marketplaces (read more about our latest advancements).

Executive summary: Materials properties in the context of the Interoperable Material-to-Device simulation box are either retrieved from external sources (database of properties) or calculated on-demand, through workflows handled by AiiDA, that manages the computations performed by Quantum ESPRESSO and SIESTA.
In this document, we detail the difference between calculation and workchains in AiiDA and their role and interconnection in the context of workflows for materials properties. The available workflows for materials properties are reported. In particular, we present the hierarchical structure of the main workchain for basic electronic structure calculations (e.g. atomic relaxation, scf, bandstructure, etc) and we focus on the workflow for the extraction of the direct/indirect bandgap of solid-state materials.
